Brothers make their own brew for Banchory Beer Festival

Brothers make their own brew for Banchory Beer Festival

The brothers behind Banchory’s biggest beer festival have revealed they have brewed their own summery concoction for this year’s event.

The Banchory Beer Festival, now in its second year, has championed locally brewed beers with summer and winter events.

Now brothers Guy and Mungo Finlayson plan to update the festival with its drinks list, adding a prosecco bar as well as offering more ciders, a host of new beers and gins and Scotland’s first rum Dark Matter, which is distilled in Banchory.

But that’s not all which will be on the menu, as the brothers will be selling their own creation following the success of their first brew sold at last year's festival.

Mungo explained: "Last year we made two casks, which is around 140 pints, whereas this year we’re making 40.

"We hadn't expected it to sell out so quickly but most people want to try brand new products."

Nicknamed Koala T, the brothers still have another visit at Alechemy Brewing in Livingstone to go in order to finalise the taste of their creation, but are hopeful its summery flavour will be a hit with festival goers.

"We've made an orange and lemon IPA, we wanted something quite light and refreshing so we’re aiming to make it around 4%. It’s perfect for summer."

The pair also plan to sell bottles of Koala T, with some north-east stockists in the pipeline should the beer prove to be a fizzing success at the festival.

Hop-ping onto the craft beer revolution to host their first festival at the Deeside Rugby Club pitches just under a year ago, both Guy and Mungo have been blown away by the event's success, quickly moving to host a second smaller event at the Woodend Barn earlier this year.

Spurred on by their initial successes the pair have worked hard to try and make sure this year's main event is bigger and better than before.

Mungo said: "This year going into summer, the Banchory Beer Festival will be three times the size of our first event. Following our last event in February, we compiled feedback on what we could improve and we decided to change it to a three day festival to make it bigger and better than before."

It’s a plan which has clearly worked for the festival, with tickets for the Saturday session selling out in just four days.

Mungo added: "Some of the feedback we received suggested we should make Sunday a family day, so we have a special licence to allow under 18’s in for the day so adults can bring in their kids.

"We’ll have a bouncy castle, face painting and balloon artists so that parents can come along and enjoy the festival with their kids."

The Banchory Beer Festival returns to the Deeside Rugby Club pitches from August 7 to 9 and more information including ticket prices can be found on their website
