Aberdeen Film Festival remain optimistic despite failed Kickstarter bid

Organisers of the Aberdeen Film Festival remain optimistic for the event’s return, despite a kickstarter campaign failing to meet its target of £8000.

Faced with the prospect of no funding for 2015, an online campaign to run the festival through donations was launched at the start of July, but with just under £400 pledged, the bid was unsuccessful.

Yet organiser Peter Watt remains optimistic that the festival will be a success, by screening a variety of films from Aberdeen, Scotland and further afield when it returns on October 23.

He said: "Obviously we were disappointed not to have got the funding that we wanted and we’ve had to change our plans slightly because of this.

"Things like acquiring some films and equipment we won’t be able to do because of a lack of funding and also one or two venues that we were looking at we now can’t afford. But we’re happy to have the ones we do have.”

Aberdeen venues Bos’n, Six Degrees North and Tunnels have all signed up to host film screenings during the festival, allowing film fans the chance to sink a Belgian beer or Margarita while they watch.

It marks a stark contrast from its inaugural event last year, which was mostly held at Cineworld multiplexes in the city.

Peter added: "I think last year, although it was nice to have Cineworld, it wasn’t the type of festival we wanted to put across. And with these alternative venues this year it will be a bit non-traditional."

Operated on a completely voluntary basis, money from film submissions and from ticket sales are the only income available for the festival, yet the lack of monetary support has failed to discourage the team from hosting the event for a second year.

Banchory’s Woodend Barn have agreed to host free screenings for secondary school students from modern languages courses as part of the festival and a new £30 ticket scheme has been introduced to allow holders entry into any of the screenings during the week.

Aberdeen Cyrenians will be supported through ticket sales, with £10 from each pass and a portion of individual tickets going towards the charity which supports those in need in the city through food banks and drop-in centres.

Aberdeen Film Festival will return to the Granite City from October 23 to 28. More information can be found on the festival’s website.
