Concern over Aberdeen crescent where street lights burn 24/7

Concern over Aberdeen crescent where street lights burn 24/7

The lights haven't gone out in an Aberdeen street all summer.

And residents and a local councillor have highlighted their concerns over the lamps which keep burning 24 hours a day, every day of the week, in Aberdeen's Kinaldie Crescent.

The problem began when Aberdeen City Council knocked down one of the light columns last March.

Ever since, several other lights in the street have been on continuously, despite the local authority receiving requests from residents to have the problem rectified.

According to Martin Greig, one of the councillors who represents the ward which includes Kinaldie Crescent, "some of the lights can't be turned off, because they are linked to other light columns."

None of which has alleviated the frustration of some members of the public.

A Kinaldie Crescent resident explained: "While working at home in March, I noticed a council truck pull up on the pavement beside one of two (apparently defective) street lamps.

"Next thing, a lone worker, armed with a grinder, knocked down the first street lamp.

"Then he taped off the opening from the remaining stub and loaded the rest of the lamp into his vehicle.

"Since then, we've looked forward to a replacement lamp arriving, but to no avail. In the meantime, several of our street lights have continued to burn 24/7 throughout the summer.

"I approached the council, but they told me that the waste of energy 'did not cost anything', I then asked them for a forecast on when the work would be completed.

"But I never received a satisfactory answer. We've learned that these lights are part of a wider project which has fallen way behind schedule. There is no forecast as to when they will be finished and we simply don't know what is happening."

Cllr Greig said: "It seems extraordinary that you have lights which can't be switched off and this matter needs urgent attention.

"It is not good enough to say that some lamps can't be turned on or off. There are also environmental issues and an unnecessary use of electricity.

"People's confidence gets dented when they see faulty infrastructure and this matter has now dragged on for months.

"I know the light columns are due for removal, but I'm very keen to see that this work is done."

Residents in Kinaldie Crescent have requested information from the council and were told there would be an update "sometime this week".

STV has contacted the council for a response.
