As crunch looms, here are five Scottish wins over Aussies

As crunch looms, here are five Scottish wins over Aussies

Scotland's record at Twickenham suggests their mantra at the stadium is: "Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter Here."

It isn't since 1983 when such stars as John Rutherford, Jim Aitken, John Beattie, Iain Milne and Colin Deans were in their pomp that the Scots last triumphed at the home of English rugby with a 22-12 victory over their opponents.

So, perhaps it is understandable the bookies aren't tipping them for success when they confront Australia in the quarter-finals of the Rugby World Cup at the venue on Sunday afternoon.

Whereas Vern Cotter's side has shone only intermittently, Michael Cheika's personnel have enjoyed a thumping win against England and a heroic triumph over Wales.

There's no doubt about it, the Scots are the underdogs. But they can derive succour from the fact they have beaten the Australians in a variety of different pursuits down the years.

And here, for those in need of a pre-game pick-me-up, we highlight some of the most memorable occasions.

2009: Rugby - Scotland 9, Australia 8.

This was a coruscating contest on a filthy Edinburgh night, as the hosts ended a 27-year losing streak against Australia.

They produced an epic defensive performance to shut the door on the Wallabies at Murrayfield.

The visitors dominated territory and possession, but it was 3-apiece at the break with Scotland stand-off Phil Godman cancelling out a Matt Giteau penalty.

And thereafter, despite wave upon wave of full-blooded attack from the Southern Hemisphere side, a Godman penalty and Chris Paterson drop-goal saw Scotland edge ahead.

There was drama at the climax when Ryan Cross ploughed over for an injury-time try, but a jittery Giteau missed his conversion attempt and the stadium erupted.

1985: Football - Scotland 2, Australia 0.

This was the first match after the tragic death of Jock Stein and an emotional Hampden Park witnessed a hard-fought success for the Scots, who were being coached by Alex Ferguson.

The Australians battled gamely to keep matters level for nearly an hour, and there was palpable tension inside the ground.

But two goals in three minutes eased the nerves of the Tartan Army, the first a sumptuous Davie Cooper free kick, the second a nifty finish from Frank McAvennie.

It allowed Ferguson's troops a decent cushion, in advance of the second leg Down Under.

And they subsequently secured their World Cup qualification, following a goalless draw in the the play-off return fixture.

1882: Cricket - Scotland beat Australia by seven wickets.

Absolutely nobody saw this result coming, least of all the conquering Aussie contingent, who had just polished off England.

But they had reckoned without the cool-as-Antarctica presence and talent of the Scotland maestro Leslie Balfour-Melville, who steered his men to an improbable victory.

The visitors were in trouble from the outset, dismissed for just 122, with Peter Thompson and Robert Macnair taking a combined haul of six for 66.

And, although the Australians battled on, determined to repair the damage, Balfour-Melville was serenity personified in striking an unbeaten 73.

His knock ensured there were joyous scenes at Raeburn Place in front of a packed crowd, a little matter of 133 years ago.

2012: Rugby - Australia 6, Scotland 9.

Greig Laidlaw, who will captain his country at Twickenham this weekend, held his nerve to land a penalty in added time as the Scots orchestrated their first win in Australia since 1982.

It was another gutsy, gritty display from Andy Robinson's ensemble, who transcended both their rivals and the appalling weather conditions.

Laidlaw, in typically phlegmatic fashion, kicked two penalties as the Scots led 6-3 at the interval.

Predictably, the hosts dominated after the break, but despite having a huge amount of possession, couldn't find a way past the resolute visitors.

Then, in similar circumstances to the aforementioned 2009 clash, there was a fraught denouement before Laidlaw sealed the win with the last kick of the ball.

2012: Football - Scotland 3, Australia 1.

This wasn't an occasion which the Socceroos will look back on with any affection.

Granted, the visitors grabbed the lead through an outstanding Mark Bresciano strike to pose early problems for Craig Levein's team.

But the hosts weren't trailing for long as Jordan Rhodes equalised with his first senior goal on his international debut.

The Easter Road crowd gained renewed reason to celebrate when Jason Davidson headed into his own net as the Scots turned up the heat in the second half.

And they rounded off their victory with a resplendent goal from Ross McCormack.
