Scotland’s first Beard and Moustache Championship has been confirmed for the capital in 2016.
Acknowledging the growing popularity of facial hair competitions around the world, Edinburgh hairdresser Garry McGill had the idea to bring a similar event to Scotland while working with Schorem Barbers in Rotterdam.
“[Schorem Barbers] are these really cool guys who deal with beards and moustaches and real rockabilly haircuts,” Garry said.
“It was an eye-opener to see it. I thought about it and realised Scotland is full of guys as sharp as the guys I have just been working with in Rotterdam.
“I thought, 'why not have a big celebration of facial hair?'”
Working alongside Callum Ross and Chris Duff, the trio have taken it upon themselves to find Scotland’s most stylish beards and moustaches, with the competition finale likely to take place in January 2016.
With a venue still to be confirmed, Garry says they plan on having a variety of different rounds for both beards and moustaches at the championship event, adding that they plan to have a category for the best ginger beard.
- The natural moustache
- The styled moustache
- The business beard
- The natural partial beard
- The styled partial beard
- The natural full beard
- The styled full beard
- Best ginger beard
From styled moustaches to 'business beards', the championships aims to have around nine categories with a freestyle category aiming to attract the more adventurous style gurus with the brief saying it can be “creative, extravagant or unusual styling”.
“I worked in London for a long time but outside of London, I feel that Edinburgh and Glasgow especially have a bigger move of facial hair than anywhere else in the UK,” Garry said,
“Scotland is just full of cool guys dying to show off their beards and facial hair .
"I think there will definitely be a competitiveness there.
“Hopefully we can create a nice festival championships that can happen on an annual basis."
